In-situ soil stabilisation for a FIFA football training pitch

This case study showcases the successful in-situ application of SMR for soil stabilisation. This project was for a FIFA Football Training pitch in Cardiff. By addressing poor geotechnical properties and a high water table, SMR achieved remarkable results while minimising environmental impact and costs.

Problem Statement

The project faced challenging geotechnical conditions, with a persistently high water table posing a risk to the stability and performance of the pitch. Soil analysis revealed moisture content above 50%, significantly higher than ideal for construction, and large sections of the site were left waterlogged after the exceptionally wet weather of November 2020.

These saturated ground conditions, combined with poor drainage, required careful planning and specialist stabilisation measures to ensure the works could proceed without compromising quality.

The SMR Solution

The client required 7,800 m² of spoil to be stabilised to achieve a minimum CBR value of 5%, with finished levels maintained within +20 mm / –30 mm tolerances.

The agreed solution involved modifying the existing spoil with a 3% SMR binder mixture, stabilising to a depth of 300 mm, and applying a 100 mm Type 1 stone capping layer. Despite challenging weather conditions, the SMR method was successfully delivered.

The process comprised a single pass application of SMR Proprietary Binder to a depth of 300 mm. The binder was rotavated into the existing ground, then compacted using a 13‑ton single drum roller. Finally, the Type 1 stone was laid and compacted to the specified 100 mm depth.

Benefits

Within just 48 hours of curing, the ground achieved a CBR value of 6.79%—exceeding the 5% requirement. After 7 days, CBR readings rose to 15.86%, clearly demonstrating the outstanding efficiency of our SMR solution.

By adopting the SMR stabilisation method, our clients not only reduced their carbon footprint but also achieved significant cost savings—without compromising the integrity or performance of the construction design.

Conclusion

SMR effectively addressed the challenge, achieving outstanding outcomes while delivering measurable benefits in cost savings and environmental stewardship. Beyond meeting the immediate project requirements, the method enhanced ground performance, reduced reliance on traditional high‑carbon materials, and accelerated construction timelines. This holistic approach not only ensured compliance with design specifications but also supported our clients’ long‑term sustainability goals.
